‘Counter Culture’ by Dr Louise Powell

In 2021 Dr Louise Powell was awarded a National Lottery Project Grant to produce, co-direct and co-write the art film ‘Counter Culture‘. It is a 25-minute film consisting of five micro short and two audio pieces written, recorded and performed by seven working-class writers first published in Kit de Waal’s critically acclaimed Common People anthology (Unbound: 2019).

Counter Culture is a piece that celebrates working-class life, and reclaims lost working-class stories in authentic voices. It premiered at Durham Book Festival in October 2021 to an overwhelmingly positive response, with praise for the strength of voice and cinematography.
