Webinar: How Class Background Shapes Academic Careers
Webinar: How Class Background Shapes Academic Careers
Thurs. 3/13, 7-8:30 EDT on Zoom: For years, working-class academics have shared personal stories about their trajectories from working-class homes into middle-class spaces. Recently, the American Sociological Association created a taskforce to explore the experiences and outcomes of “First-Generation/Working-Class Sociologists,” finding some significant class differences compared to more class-advantaged peers.
In this webinar, the latest in the “Talking Class” series of the Working-Class Studies Association, hosts Jack Metzgar and Betsy Leondar-Wright will ask Allison Hurst about her interview-based study of sociologists who grew up poor, working-class, and/or were first in their families to earn a college degree. Hurst will describe the many ways that the structure of academia impedes career success for this population and why so many continue to struggle to find a place “where we belong.”
As always, your questions and your stories will be welcomed. How has your class background influenced your work life?
